 | Perennial of the Year |
Each year the members of the Perennial Plant Association select a new Perennial Plant of the Year. We are pleased to announce and present the winner for 2010:
Blue False Indigo (Baptisia australis)
This easy and almost carefree, sun-loving perennial forms large upright and bushy mounds of blue-green leaves and is perfect for the middle to back of a border. In early summer it produces long spikes of indigo-blue pea-like flowers that resemble Lupines. Seedpods develop after that and by autumn these dry and change into rattling seedheads. Stems are strong and usually remain in place all winter, needing to be cut back to the ground in spring before the new growth resumes.
